Biological and economic factors in the selection of cultured fish species and the development of a bio-economic model ArchiMer
Wu, R.
The selection of candidate species for mariculture is determined by a number of biological factors, e.g. foraging efficiency, growth efficiency, mortality, grow-out period and susceptibility to environmental fluctuations, disease and crowding, as well as economic factors e.g. the supply and price of fry, grow-out cost and price of adult. A computer model incorporating these major factors is being developed, to determine and compare the potential of different culture species.

Effects of nutritional requirement of live food organisms on growth and survival of barramundi/seabass Lates calcarifer (Bloch) larvae. ArchiMer
Rimmer, M; Reed, A.
Larvae of barramundi (Lates calcarifer ) reared intensively in some Australian hatcheries have suffered periodic high mortalities which have been ascribed to nutritional deficiencies in the live food organisms used, particularly deficiencies of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Barramundi larvae reared in an experimental system and fed on four diets, representing combinations of supplemented and unsupplemented rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis ) and supplemented and unsupplemented brine shrimp (Artemia salina ). Supplementation of rotifers and brine shrimp with a commercially available microencapsulated diet increased the levels of several polyunsaturated fatty acids in the food organisms.

Génotypage des géniteurs de Lates calcarifer de Tahiti : aide à la domestication raisonnée du Loup Tropical pour la filière tahitienne ArchiMer
Vonau, Vincent; Rouxel, Catherine; Saulnier, Denis; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Nedelec, Georges; Goyard, Emmanuel.
The tropical seabass Lates calcarifer was introduced in Tahiti in 1984 and then was domesticated without other introduction. Three successive generations have been obtained in captivity. Tissue samples of the 38 animaIs which represent the total Tahitian broodstock were preserved in alcohol to be genotyped with four microsatellite markers (Yue et al., 2001). Three of four described markers were successfully transferred to the laboratory of genetics of Tahiti (marker LcaM01, LcaM02, LcaM03), as the revelation technology available locally did not allow the use of LcaM04 in routine. The results show that the genetic diversity of the tahitian broodstock is not equivalent of the one of the species, which could be explained by the small size of the founder...

Improved larval survival at metamorphosis of Asian seabass (<i>Lates calcarifer</i>) using omega3-HUFA-enriched live food OMA
Dhert, P.; Lavens, P.; Duray, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
Asian seabass (<i>Lates calcarifer</i>) larvae were fed <i>Brachionus</i> cultured on <i>Chlorella</i> and, as soon as ingestion was possible, different types of <i>Artemia</i> , i.e., nauplii of the San Francisco Bay (SFB) strain, Great Salt Lake (GSL) strain or GSL nauplii that had been bioencapsulated with an emulsion containing high levels of the omega3-HUFAs (highly unsaturated fatty acids) 20:5 and 22:6. San Francisco Bay <i>Artemia</i> with a good natural fatty acid profile and small body size could be offered earlier than the larger but HUFA-poor Great Salt Lake strain. The poor nutritional quality of the latter, however, could be corrected by enriching the nauplii with an omega3-HUFA...

Larval rearing and weaning of seabass, Lates calcarifer (Block), on experimental compounded diets ArchiMer
Fuchs, Jacques; Nedelec, Georges.
Larval rearing trials of seabass larvae, either imported from Singapore or obtained from the captive broodstock of IFREMER/C.O.P. at Tahiti, were carried out since 1987, by testing different technologies originally used in South East Asia (green-water culture, sequential water changes) or developed by IFREMER for other species (clear water system, preys enrichment, continuous water renewal).

L'élevage du Loup tropical (Lates calcarifer, Bloch) en Polynésie Française. Approche technico-économique ArchiMer
Pierson, R; Thouard, Emmanuel; Nedelec, Georges.
Due to lack of knowledge about the seabass (Lates calcarifer) market in Polynesia, various production levels were considered to develop a managing tool for decision, making relevant development strategy and adapted rearing technology. This work is an analysis of the economical parameters of known rearing techniques depending on various production levels. The comparative study of the techniques, phase by phase, regarding the production cost and the investments prompted us to select the semi-intensive larval rearing technology under the current economical conditions. However, the larval rearing extensive technique could be of highest interest for productions lower than 60 metric tons a year. Growing-out in floating net-cages appeared to be the only...

L'élevage du Loup tropical (Lates calcarifer, Bloch) en Polynésie Française. Techniques d'élevage - Synthèse de neuf années de recherche ArchiMer
Thouard, Emmanuel; Nedelec, Georges; Pierson, R.
Lates calcarifer, a species originated from Southeast Asia and Australia. Was selected among several tropical finfish species because its particular ability for aquaculture. Nine years of research led to a rearing technology adapted to the environmental and socio-economical conditions of French Polynesia. This report is a synthesis of the works that resulted in the control of the whole rearing cycle. A captive broodstock was necessary when using such an introduced species. This fish, a protandrous hermaphrodite, presents a spawning seasonality. A broodstock conditionning facility was designed to get mature spawners throughout the year. Environmental manipulations associated with a hormonal induction method guaranteed egg production aIl over the year....

Mortalités massives en élevage larvaire de Lates Calcarifer ( Mise en évidence d'un virus neurotrope ) ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Thouard, Emmanuel; Weppe, Maurice.
Since 1986 high mortality of hatchery-reared sea bass, Lates Calcarifer, larvae appeared in Ifremer's Pacifie Oceanological Center (Tahiti). Light and electron microscopy show vacuolation and cells with cytoplasmic inclusion bodies in the brain, the cord and the eye relina of affected larvae. Numerous non-enveloped particles identified as viral units, icosahedral in morphology and measuring about 25 nm in diameter were found in the cytoplasm of the degenerating cells. In affected larvae, these particles were isolated by density grandient centrifugations. In vitro tests on cell lines and in vivo test on fish are performed with samples of diseased larvae. And immunisation of mice are made with purified immunoglobulins of Lates calcarifer.

Nutrition of the seabass Lates calcarifer ArchiMer
Cuzon, Gerard; Chou, R; Fuchs, Jacques.
The Primary Production Department of Singapore (PPD) studies covered the weaning of seabass from fingerlings stage onwards and the dietary protein requirement of early grow-out fish. Dietary protein requirement of early grow-out seabass was demonstrated to be between 40-50%, at dietary lipid level of 12%, using fishmeal protein. Nevertheless fish growth was significantly higher with trashfish feed, but apparent protein retention was significantly better with formulated feed.

Selection of finfish species (seabass) as candidates for aquaculture in French Polynesia ArchiMer
Fuchs, Jacques; Gasset, Eric; Nedelec, Georges.
Species with a very high potential for aquaculture, allowing development projects on a short terms basis: the seabass originating from S.E. Asia. Species, potentially interesting but presenting some drawbacks, as difficulties to perform larval rearing or presenting pathological problem. Species considered as difficult to rear and not retained like Siganus argenteus , Siganidae or Caranx ignobilis , Carangidae. The future development of finfish in Polynesia is emphasized and a project of sea bass netcage culture in Polynesian lagoon is presented.

State of the art of Asian seabass <i>Lates calcarifer</i> larviculture OMA
Dhert, P.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Innovative techniques opened new perspectives in the larviculture or the Asian seabass in the 1980s. Induced spawning maximized egg production while sperm preservation reduced the problem of male brood-stock supply. Studies of biometric characteristics of the fish larvae resulted in improved feeding strategies with live food. This in turn permitted a more rational use of expensive <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. Nutritional enhancement of the highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) composition of the life food resulted in significant improvement of survival and physiological condition of the larvae of the metamorphosis. A salinity stress test enabled the evaluation of the larvae's physiological status and estimation of their HUFA-requirements during the...

Status and potential of Australian Lates calcarifer culture. ArchiMer
Mackinnon, M.
Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings.

The Australian mariculture industry: Finfish, molluscs and crustaceans. ArchiMer
Baker, J; Kenway, M.
Australia's interest in mariculture has been comparatively recent when compared with the developments in many other Pacific countries. Two exceptions are native oysters, cultivated for food since the late 1880's, and pearl oysters which have been cultured, particularly in the northern part of Australia, following the initial work of Saville-Kent.
